Between now and the time I began writing In Love And College, I’ve interacted with more than 200 couples and 100 individuals. My examples in the book come straight from couples’ stories, as well as a select few letters I’ve received from readers. In Love And College has been an ongoing project since 2007, when I decided to compile everything I learned about college relationships into a readable, practical guide for the benefit of other college students.
I’m not a doctor, and I don’t have a degree in psychology. But I’m a writer, and as such, I write what I know so I can help others. One of my interviewees put it best when she said, “I am not interested in what a doctor has to say about my love life. I am 19 years old. I do want advice from someone who’s been there and done that, but not ten years ago.”
College students could get love advice from their parents. They could read books by Dr. Phil and have long conversations with a counselor at the student health clinic. But they usually don’t. At this age, we all want to be understood, and most of us realize that a parent or an older doctor is not always capable of relating to a 21st-century young adult. College students constantly turn to their peers for advice, and they follow it. Ideally, the best love advice for a college student would come from a friend who has a lot of relationship experience and has done enough research to give realistic, educated insight. My book is written from the perspective of the reader’s friend – the friend who has done his homework.
In Love And College is the result of everything about love and commitment that I’ve witnessed and experienced throughout my very recent and current days of personal counseling. It is designed with the college student in mind, as it provides fact, opinion, and real-life examples without bogging you down with sermon or an unbearable amount of cutesy anecdotes about dating.
I hope you’ll give my book a little bit of your eyes’ time, but most of all, I hope you enjoy it and maybe even learn something from it. Unlike many dating books, In Love And College won’t show you a set formula to apply to your own relationship; that’s not beneficial to anyone. Instead, my book supplies you with something much more valuable: your own ability to make a relationship work.
